There is nothing that bothers me quite as much as being woken from a good dream.
I imagine it is a consequence of my often overactive imagination, but they can become wonderfully vivid at times. I haven’t found what the trigger is yet (note: I’ve never taken acid- yet!) but they can get bizarrely vivid.
Sounds, smells, touch and even taste can be as sharp as they are in reality, overwhelmingly so, and feelings induced in the dream can linger in me long after waking. Unfortunately these factors can also apply to my nightmares, which leads to a batshit crazy, and utterly terrifying experience. It would worry me at times the caliber of nightmare my mind could create. At its very worst I was convinced I was some sort of subconscious masochist. There are things i’ve seen and done in dreams that i would never speak a word of, lest some psychoanalyst has a field day. Worse still when a nightmare turns lucid and you cant wake up even though you know you’re asleep. You try and try until, with a gasp you wrench yourself away from it and wake up a breathless, sweaty mess. I know I'm not the only one who’s experienced this. Bad buzz.
But I’d prefer not to talk about the bad dreams. Its the happy ones I’d rather hold on to…Besides, the auld ‘mares are few and far between nowadays, a reassuring sign of my state of mind :)
Im also one heck of a daydreamer, and my minds wanders off into a fantasy at almost every chance. This, as you might guess, tries people’s patience, but thankfully growing older has taught me to try harder… but when i think back, oh god, my poor teachers. Its also really interesting to read up on dream meanings and interpretations, for you’d be surprised at the symbolism that you can find. Some seemingly innate or bizarre detail can in fact be manifestations of different parts of your own individual consciousness: your fears, wants, needs, hopes expressing themselves while you sleep.
A few mornings ago, during an irregular but much appreciated sleep-in, I dreamt that Yoseph and I had ran away together to some unknown destination. It was warm and tropical, and in the air hung a heavy, sweet smell. We were sitting underneath the branches of a very large tree and eating strange fruits that I have never seen before, and laughing at the colored stains they were leaving on our fingers and faces… It was short and simple, but the feeling of the heat on my skin, the taste in my mouth, the smell in the air. Crazy vivid.
It was a most delightfully happy dream, I should very much like to have that one again sometime, I probably never will again though.
Ill take my inattention, my scatty, fragmented nature… my disorientation. The vivid dreaming makes it seem like it evens out somehow.
Ill stop now for fear of boring you, but I will probably come back to this subject again. Ever since i can remember I’ve had a sort of love/hate relationship with my dreams, and I often feel the need to recount them as soon as I wake, on paper or in spoken word, lest I ever forget them.

-an old post I found on my tumblr back when I used to use it for writing more... hope you like.

  1. Did you ever get sleep paralysis?
I used to all the time, it's so scary!
It's when your mind is awake but your muscles are all still asleep, so you can't move at all, or open your eyes or your mouth to speak! You just have to wait for your mind to go back to sleep so you can wake up at a normal stage in the seep cycle!

  2. Yes I did Aisling! I found it used to happen the most when Id fall asleep on a couch instead of a bed. Like if I was napping at home on the couch it would happen sometimes, often leading to me freaking out trying to move, and ending up falling off the couch! No Bueno!
